Stanley Steemer International, a well-known carpet cleaning company based in Dublin, Ohio, recently experienced a significant data breach affecting approximately 67,000 customers. The breach was initially detected on March 6, following which an investigation revealed that unauthorized access to the company’s systems began on February 10. This intrusion led to the acquisition of certain customer records by the attackers.
D. Ryan Jankowski, the Vice President of Legal Affairs and Chief Administrative Officer at Stanley Steemer, reported the incident to the Maine Attorney General’s office. The breach notification outlined that 66,978 customers nationwide were affected, including 16 from Maine.
In response to the breach, Stanley Steemer promptly notified federal authorities and implemented measures to enhance the security of their systems and revise their internal cybersecurity protocols. The comprehensive review of the incident was concluded by September 7.
Stanley Steemer, established in 1947, provides a variety of cleaning services, ranging from carpet and tile cleaning to air duct maintenance for both residential and commercial clients.
While the company did not specify the exact method used by the hackers to infiltrate its network, the data compromised in the breach includes customer names, Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, and financial account details. This includes sensitive information such as credit and debit card numbers, security codes, and PIN codes.
